Canoeing & Kayaking
Paddling the Porcupine Mountains
Paddlers can canoe or kayak the Ontonagon River, which offers an amazing variety of paddling experiences along more than 150 miles. Paddling is also available on a number of other area rivers as well.
Sea kayaking is also a popular activity on Lake Superior. The clear water, rugged shores and pristine environment make Lake Superior kayaking an incredibly unique experience. Wind and waves have carved sea caves and other interesting rock formations in many places.
Abundant public access to waterways is available at any public lands located along Lake Superior and the Ontonagon River. Some of the most popular access points include:
- Big Iron River in Silver City
- Union Bay in Silver City (located in the Porcupine Mountain Wilderness State Park)
- Sand flats between Ontonagon and Silver City
- Green Park between Ontonagon and Silver City
- Ontonagon Marina
